The Darfur Crisis

GPAC calls for sincere efforts to reach a negotiated political solution in Darfur, under the leadership of the African Union, with pressure applied to both the government of Sudan and the rebel groups. GPAC calls for a sincere implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the government of Sudan and the SPLM, including the fulfillment of pledges of support from international donors that would rebuild the southern part of Sudan and hopefully preserve the unity of the country.

GPAC does not condone violence in any way, especially against unarmed women and children, and believes that all parties responsible for crimes should be held accountable, including those supplying arms and material support to the rebel groups.

In 2003 and 2005, GPAC lead fact-finding delegations of journalists and community leaders from across the United States to view the situation first hand, and to speak to government, religious and opposition leaders from throughout the country of Sudan. The group visited Khartoum and conflict ridden region of Darfur. They met with government officials, opposition figures, tribal leaders and representatives of international relief organizations.
